A3 - ARCH 263

Assignment 3 Description

Your goal is to design and fabricate an object of beauty” to be 8” x 8” x 8” (512 Cubic Inches). Your “object of beauty” should be constructed primarily of 1/4” thick “clear” Plexiglas plies. Other materials (i.e. 3D printer, wire, wood, plexi-glass dowels, etc. maybe used). Create a “virtual” SPACE / SCULPTURE CUBE --- play, explore, your object should provide some type of user interaction and / or transform in some manner --- think about accent color(s), lighting, structure and movement. Create an abstract work of art and beauty --- your final MODEL and IMAGES should have EXTERNAL sculptural qualities of abstract art and INTERNAL spatial qualities that show an interesting series of ENTRY, PATH, … Large, Intermediate and small spaces … a focal point, EXIT and simple, elegant use of geometry, structure, surface textures, color, light and overall beauty.

The goal of this project was to create a path through the clear acrylic that would run from the top corner to the opposite bottom corner. Along this path, there would be extrusions that lead you to the outside and small nodes that create this feeling of traveling through a cave. There would also be extrusions that show blue dowel rods that connect the pieces of clear acrylic and also a 3-D printed object that is placed near the end of the path. The blue dowel rods, when lighted at the ends of the rods, illuminate the acrylic planes and help lead you along the path. The placement of the 3-D object creates a special moment that celebrates the end of the journey through the cube.
