Project 3

Project Description

You have been commissioned by a mid-career attorney, George, whose practice is located in Nairobi, Kenya. George would like to build a bird watch retreat on his recently acquired 354 acre property. The property is in a highly sensitive ecological environment; most of this region is private property and not protected by conservation zones. The attorney’s land acquisition, and proposed development, is part of the on-going private subdivision of this region’s property; and typically results in the loss of bio-diversity (flora and fauna). George is a nature lover, and likes bird watching, and is conflicted by his own contribution to this conservation dilemma. Ultimately, he has decided to make the project as low impact as possible. He would like the project to provide an example of sensitive land use and a means of maintaining, or even enhancing, and promoting preservation of the regions natural and cultural beauty

I have designed a small, modular home that rests on a group of piers that allow the structure to rise and fall with the tide of the water from the lake. Inside the home, there is a group of wall partitions that can be moved in order to allow for there to be as much open space for the 12 - 16 people that can reside in the home. There is also storage for small boats and bikes that can be used to get to the site. The home is also designed to be off-grid and uses solar panels, green toilets, rain water collection, and other sustainable systems.
